Discover the joy of reading!
Often, it is the students who can least afford to lose the reading gains they've achieved during the school year who fall the farthest behind when they return to the classroom after a summer break away from formal literacy instruction.
~ Maryann Mraz, Timothy V. Rasinski
Research shows that there are, on average, two months' worth of reading progress lost over the summer break. This loss compounds, year after year, so that the child could have lost, and had to re-learn up to two years of reading growth by middle school. The decline in literacy skills affects a child both academically, and emotionally.
To ameliorate learning loss, it is advantageous to maintain consistent literacy instruction, along with reading in community with other children, who model reading for pleasure, through the summer months.
